Sand Rivers is a haven of natural luxury within the vast Selous wilderness, the largest game reserve in Africa. Situated on the banks of the Rufiji River, it has been designed in an expansive open style to take advantage of the wonderful setting and extensive views.
This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and scenically-varied parts of the Selous, ranging from gorges to open-plains, swamps, sand rivers and lakes. Hippos, crocodiles, plains game and amazing birdlife are often visible on the sandbanks right in front of the lodge.
The cottages are constructed from local wood and stone, each open fronted and carefully furnished in a traditional organic style. The swimming pool, set into the rocks at the rivers edge, is under the shade of an ancient baobab tree and overlooks the river.
With the Lodge as your base, you can commence on game drives into the bush in open 4 X 4 vehicles. Depending on the season you can see Hippos and Crocodile, Elephant, Buffalo, Wild Dogs, Leopard and Lion. Excellent bird watching is also to be had – Honey Buzzard, Pels Fishing Owl, African Hobby Falcon, African Broadbill, Bat Hawk, Peregrine Falcon are just some of the highlights.
Walks are filled with discovery as you are able to explore the network of sand rivers and pause along the way to enjoy the numerous spectacular lakes. The river is a fisherman’s delight, made all the more exciting by the ever-present chance to hook a legendary fighting Tiger Fish.
Overnight fly camping is a speciality at Sand Rivers, offering the opportunity to experience a night ‘out in the open’, in especially adapted mosquito nets under the African night sky.
